Goldenseal Leaf — The Gentler Side of a Legendary Plant
Long before goldenseal had a Latin name, Cherokee and Iroquois healers knew it by its brilliant yellow color, a dye so vivid that settlers called it "yellow puccoon." By 1798, physician Benjamin Smith Barton was writing about the Cherokee's use of the plant, and a century later pharmacist John Uri Lloyd declared that few American medicines were more important. The root got most of the fame. The leaf is the quieter half of the story.*
The science, in plain language: Goldenseal leaf carries the same golden alkaloids as the root, berberine and hydrastine, at gentler levels. It also holds flavonoids that live mostly in the leaf. In lab studies, those leaf flavonoids helped berberine work harder, and leaf extract outperformed root extract in that teamwork.* Human research has focused on safety: goldenseal changes how the liver processes many medications, so we recommend short, mindful use.*

HOW TO BREW
Add 1 tsp of leaf to 8–10 oz just-boiled water. Cover and steep 10–15 minutes. Strain and sip. Enjoy up to 2 cups daily for no more than 2 weeks, then take at least 2 weeks off.
Tradition tip: In Appalachian and Eclectic practice, goldenseal's bitterness was considered part of the medicine. Sip it slowly, and if you need to soften it, a spoonful of honey or a sprig of peppermint keeps the tradition and tames the bite.
INGREDIENTS: Goldenseal leaf (Hydrastis canadensis), cut & sifted.
SUGGESTED USE: 1 tsp steeped 10–15 minutes covered, up to 2 cups daily, 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off.
Please note: Not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for infants and children. Goldenseal interacts with many medications, including diabetes medications, so check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any prescription. Avoid with liver or kidney conditions or jaundice.
