Description

Boswellia serrata | Joint Comfort · Ayurvedic Shallaki · Boswellic Acids

Ancient Ayurvedic healers gave the salai tree a beautiful nickname: Gajabhakshya, "food of elephants," because elephants were said to seek it out. Its golden resin, called Shallaki in Sanskrit and salai guggul or dhup in Hindi, has been tapped in the dry hills of central and northern India for thousands of years and appears in the Sushruta Samhita.

A note on species: "frankincense" covers several Boswellia trees. The Biblical and Arabian frankincense is a different species. This is Indian frankincense, Boswellia serrata, with its own 2,000-year story and some of the strongest research of any traditional resin. A 2020 meta-analysis of 7 randomized controlled trials found Boswellia may support joint comfort, stiffness, and function, with the best results after at least 4 weeks.* Honest note: most of those trials used concentrated extracts, so whole resin is the gentler, traditional form. Preclinical research suggests its boswellic acids, especially one called AKBA, may support a healthy inflammatory response.*

Why Indian Frankincense?

  • Meta-analysis of 7 RCTs: may support joint comfort, stiffness, and mobility*
  • May support a healthy inflammatory response*
  • Rich in boswellic acids, including AKBA
  • Known as Shallaki in Ayurvedic medicine and recorded in the Sushruta Samhita
  • Best results in research came with consistent use over at least 4 weeks
  • Whole golden resin tears — grind fresh for each use

How to Use

  1. Adults: grind 2 pea-sized pieces (approx. 1 g) with a dedicated mortar and pestle or spice grinder
  2. Take with lukewarm water after a meal

Traditional tip: In Ayurveda, Shallaki is taken with lukewarm water after meals. That carrier, called anupana, is believed to help the body receive the herb.
