Yellow Dock Root — The Spring Cleanser of Old Europe
Every spring, European herbalists headed to the hedgerows with a spade. Their target was a curly-leaved weed with a root the color of mustard. In 1652, Nicholas Culpeper recommended yellow dock root when the blood or liver needed attention. When settlers carried the plant across the Atlantic, Native nations from the Iroquois to the Zuni put it to their own use, from cough remedies to skin poultices. By 1890, it had earned a place in the U.S. Pharmacopeia.*
The science, in plain language: Yellow dock's golden root holds natural anthraquinones such as emodin and chrysophanol, which gently encourage the bowel to move, plus tannins that give it a drying, astringent edge.* In lab studies, its root extracts show antioxidant activity.* Human research is limited, so we share yellow dock for what it is: a time-honored traditional bitter, used briefly and mindfully.*
